The player character and protagonist
of the first game is referred to only as "new guy" and "Point Man" by
other F.E.A.R. operatives and in mission briefings. Initially, the
player knows little about him, aside from the fact that he has been on
the team for only a week, his role as the F.E.A.R. team's new "point man", and that he is a former green beret.[citation needed]
Although Point Man's character model is never explicitly shown in the
first game, his reflection can be seen in liquids if the graphical
shader settings are set to maximum. He wears a balaclava that completely conceals his face, the same F.E.A.R. uniform worn by Spen Jankowski, and red goggles. His face is shown in F.E.A.R. 3, revealing an appearance similar to chief villain Paxton Fettel, albeit with facial hair.[citation needed]
His reflexes are well beyond the human norm, allowing him to perform
maneuvers with surgical accuracy in an extremely short span of time, an
ability portrayed in the game as the world slowing down around him. In
this special game state, everything slows down by a factor of 5, and his
movement and firing speed is doubled.[citation needed]
Point Man's origins and identity are unclear to the player at the beginning of the game.
